You are making a mistake somewhere. There should be nothing stopping you making a shortcut on the desktop. An alternative way of making the shortcut is to find the WMP entry in your Start menu, right-click on it, select More, select Open file location, copy the WMP shortcut that you are then shown and paste that shortcut onto your desktop. With Windows 10, there is an easy method of saving shortcuts to your desktop. All you have to do is open the Start menu, find the app or program you want, and click on the tile and drag it to your desktop.
